It’s been over 12 years that I’ve used <i>Blogger</i> to get out my thoughts about Alaska and fishing salmon on the world famous Kenai River. I've had nearly 250,000 views and I thank everyone who came to this site to see what I had to say.<br />
<br />
But, no more.<br />
<br />
When we upgraded our website, <i>WordPress</i> and not <i>Blogger</i> was compatible and that’s the reason for the change. I’m very comfortable with the format I’ve been using, but it’s time for this old dog to learn a few new tricks...<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
From here on out, if you want to continue to read new thoughts and new fishing reports, you'll need to go directly to the <a href="http://www.beavercreekcabins.com/">Beaver Creek Cabins & Guide Service</a> website. It can be found in three places: the blog icon on the top banner, the bottom of the home page, or on the <b>Fishing </b>tab under “Kenai River Blog.” Easy stuff.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So long everybody on <i>Blogger</i>, and thanks for the memories.<br />

It's only fitting that I'm writing a tribute to my Uncle Dean today. On this day, December 7th, I would call Dean-O and ask him what day it was. Without hesitation he would say, "today is the day that Pearl Makki got bombed in Two Harbors." If you're of Finnish descent, from Minnesota, or know my Uncle Dean, you will completely get this joke. Nobody told more cornball jokes than he did.<br />
<br />
Dean-O sadly passed away on December 1st. I was fortunate to spend many days with him in the hospital and his apartment talking sports, fishing, and listening to his jokes. “I took a turn for the nurse” is what he would say when I asked how he was feeling. Classic Dean-O.<br />

Almost always, when we’re fishing on the river and a restroom break is needed, we go back to the cabins. After all, the cabins are convenient and I know Jane keeps them clean. However, on a rare occasion this past September, we decided to stop at the Eagle Rock boat launch to take a break. Upgrades have been made to this site and one of the many new things I saw was a prominent sign sponsored by the Kenai River Professional Guide Association. It was hard not to notice the headline: <b><i>Go With A Guide, Don’t Book With A Crook</i></b>. That’s about as blunt as a baseball bat fish whacker...<br />

There’s no doubt illegal guiding has been an issue and continues to be an issue on the Kenai River. It’s good to see the Kenai River Professional Guide Association take an active role in helping address this problem. </div>

<br />
<b>bun-gle </b><br />
<div>
<i>verb</i></div>
<div>
<b>to carry out (a task) clumsily or incompetently </b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I’ll start the post with this: in no way did the United States Coast Guard (USCG) bungle the renewal of my Coast Guard captain's license. The bungle came from an independent clinic where I had taken a Coast Guard physical in October. The USCG did their job; they reviewed the information given to them. Unfortunately, the information collected was erroneous. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A little background. In order to be a fishing guide for hire on navigable waters, a USCG captain's license is required. Every five years this license needs to be renewed. The three main parts of the renewal are documentation of at least 90 days spent on the water during the past three years, passing a drug test, and passing a physical. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the last 15 years I’ve had the same doctor at an independent clinic in Kenai administer a USCG physical. When I called the clinic in October to book an appointment, I was told the doctor I'd been seeing retired and they would schedule me with a new doctor. That would work, I thought. When I arrived for my appointment, I was told my new doctor recently quit and I couldn’t be examined that day. I was asked if it would be okay to reschedule for another time. Sure, why not? This is now known to me as "red flag number one." </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I showed up for my rescheduled appointment, a young nurse took my blood pressure (it took two attempts), measured and weighed me, and then administered a hearing and vision test. Everything seemed smooth except the field of vision (peripheral) test. A device was used that I'd never seen before. It was some type of paper halo that I wore like a visor. I had to stare straight ahead and let the nurse know when I could see an arrow in my peripheral vision. It was done three times and every time the arrow was in a different spot. How could it vary this much? This is now known to me as "red flag number two." The number the nurse eventually wrote down was 93. When the nurse was finished a physician assistant came in to complete the physical. When he told me I was the first Coast Guard physical he has ever done, it became known to me as "red flag number three." He told me everything was good and he signed off on the paper work.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Excited to have this out of the way, the following day I drove to the USCG regional exam office in Anchorage to have office personnel check that all my paperwork was in order. It was, and they shipped my renewal packet off to the examiners at the National Maritime Center in West Virginia. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A week goes by and instead of getting a notification that my new credentials were being mailed, I get a notice that I've failed the field of vision test. My options are to accept the results, which would have me surrender my USCG captain's license, or I could be retested by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. <i>Panic </i>was a mild word for what I felt when I read this. If I didn't pass the retest, I would be forced to retire from guiding prematurely. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I immediately made an appointment with an optometrist and waited a grueling week to see him. The USCG informed me that I would need a minimum of 100 in the field of vision test. As stated earlier, the Kenai nurse found the number to be 93. When the real eye doctor finished the exam, he said I tested out at 135. Whew! Double whew! It was instant relief to know that I passed and can still be a Kenai River guide. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What is the moral of the story? The moral of the story is I will not go to an independent clinic five years from now when my license needs to be renewed.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/6BubDGcEyzPq0L9y_ILj8qow9SmsrceDIEfEY0INNkn5edBtDeSlA7LMODQ" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_c973_d6ee_7979_3755" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/6BubDGcEyzPq0L9y_ILj8qow9SmsrceDIEfEY0INNkn5edBtDeSlA7LMODQ" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
August started out strong with combination trips of red and silver salmon on any given day. By the middle of the month, with declining red numbers, our full attention was given to silver salmon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/q6s8OkzqCvWyeVuvVSV-qt2c33wW0HtoTPm1SQGTLQlQx8FqMtB6q7KwyT0" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_19d3_83a9_fcd3_b6b2" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/q6s8OkzqCvWyeVuvVSV-qt2c33wW0HtoTPm1SQGTLQlQx8FqMtB6q7KwyT0" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
Overall, August was a decent month for chasing salmon on the Kenai River. Some days we caught a boat limit quickly, other days we had to grind it out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/Ucmhbxrec8qDyc0MXNHvFmks1shnjyYWqlseo0BHbiUo_q6Endv0nlLWeMg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_de61_4fa5_ce05_d02" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/Ucmhbxrec8qDyc0MXNHvFmks1shnjyYWqlseo0BHbiUo_q6Endv0nlLWeMg" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
September proved to be more difficult than August, and quite frankly, much more difficult that I've been accustom to. An okay day would be followed by a tough day. It was anyone's guess what would happen day after day. There was one overriding factor to the inconsistency of the second run of silvers: there weren't many fish. Except for one glaring exception, we found fish everyday. The exception was the famous banana morning. For those of you who believe in the curse of the banana, your superstition was confirmed. I personally think we were fishless because we only had a couple of hours to find what few fish were in the river, and we ran out of time to track them down. Maybe it was a little of both, maybe...<br />
<br />
Well, that's it. It took two posts to basically say we had another fine season of fishing with lots of great people. I look forward to sharing the Kenai experience next year with many longtime friends, and with new ones.<br />

<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/D2OeiXMjMncocvB0Ysn8MMI8ODLvu0SWaU6DJiDlSVAshRR57rP0itWJ8j4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_1ca2_82f0_9f01_ae41" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/D2OeiXMjMncocvB0Ysn8MMI8ODLvu0SWaU6DJiDlSVAshRR57rP0itWJ8j4" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
2019 was a challenging season. In a nutshell: reds great, kings not so great, and silvers were some where in the middle.<br />
<div>
<br />
The early run of Kenai kings (May/June) was disappointing. A low return coupled with warm temperatures made for difficult fishing. The upside was the strong return of Russian River red salmon. It's one of the first times in my career that I pursued red salmon in the lower Kenai River in the month of June and limits were caught. I definitely will be doing more of this in the future.<br />
<br />
The late run of Kenai kings (July) mirrored the early run. Low returns and poor water conditions made for difficult fishing. The blessing in July and early August was the strong return of red salmon. Those who chose to pursue these fish had excellent results.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you’re wondering about the king photo above, that’s Noel Estalilla. In 45 years of fishing the Kenai, Noel set a personal best with the release of this gorgeous 52” king. A thank you goes to his brother Francis for letting me use the photo.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/JpTDLlUkV7Dq6HRstUOX_Invn_468DS_hYS23qKS-LLoKjQ25oCz0lpmFbg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_196f_8df7_3ad7_5b41" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/JpTDLlUkV7Dq6HRstUOX_Invn_468DS_hYS23qKS-LLoKjQ25oCz0lpmFbg" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="297" /></a></div>
For the 2020 May/July season, I believe flexibility will be the key. If the kings are in, we fish for kings. If the reds are in, we fish for reds. </div>

Speaking of tradition, another blog staple lives on: the biannual posting of dock photos. In the spring, the dock goes in, the fall it comes out. It’s always a bit sad when the season is really over.<br>
<div>
<div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/By7-ZkoIE1POKZWLk6AJGFOhCRvIJYHt0EJoXNM7M0y4PocI6kyOS6zDNvA" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_fbd_11aa_9af0_118c" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/By7-ZkoIE1POKZWLk6AJGFOhCRvIJYHt0EJoXNM7M0y4PocI6kyOS6zDNvA" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300"></a></div>
I’m always asked how high the tide gets at river mile 10. When I respond that the wood dock will be partially underwater there’s always a look of astonishment. Our area boasts the second highest tides in the world and it’s reach will affect the first 14 miles of the Kenai River. It never fails to impress me. </div>

It's becoming a tradition. The late night phone call from <a href="http://www.alaskafishingtrips.biz/">Boo Kandas</a> asking if we want to fish and help him take his boat out of the Homer harbor for the season. With a perfect weather forecast, Jane and I were quick to lend a hand.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/J4CmGu6UXFOpbhGvfsbhX-zwmXOTyxLGUXRafJ5mmfr3woEC0sHT4ESbhbU" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_39c6_a82b_5c11_f836" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/J4CmGu6UXFOpbhGvfsbhX-zwmXOTyxLGUXRafJ5mmfr3woEC0sHT4ESbhbU" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
It was a pleasant break from our end of the season chores. As Jane said on the boat ride out to the fishing grounds, <i>"it's nice to be able to spend the day with you." </i>And, of course, my response is <i>"yup"</i>. Which I know she knows means that I feel the same and I'm really a lucky guy to have her in my life because being married to a fisherman means long days and not a lot of quality time spent together in the summer. But I digress....</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/OfrdEUzFtw9gsFDocMjBN_eYTFRQZ3dLAQoc56y4Re9LSPwDgJTump7E3lQ" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_f7a8_d626_fcf3_6fce" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/OfrdEUzFtw9gsFDocMjBN_eYTFRQZ3dLAQoc56y4Re9LSPwDgJTump7E3lQ" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
We first tried to catch a few king salmon. No luck. We switched over to halibut and had consistent action. Here’s Jane with her first fish of the day.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/72H6rwX01B3EKf7a5tjZP9lq42mQWy6gpCkF4kocJl4Kj8uWQqjLnNiYKbY" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_7d9b_9755_19fd_6328" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/72H6rwX01B3EKf7a5tjZP9lq42mQWy6gpCkF4kocJl4Kj8uWQqjLnNiYKbY" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Look close. That's the face of a halibut fisherman realizing how deep 260 feet can be when a 45lb halibut is attached to the other end of the line.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

By late afternoon we had all the fish we needed. Here's Boo lining up the day's haul for a photo.</div>

Here's the crew (less Boo). From left to right are Brad, Alice, myself, and Jane.<br />

Mission accomplished. The boat is now in storage and our freezers have halibut fillets in them. It was a wonderful day, with wonderful people, and a perfect exclamation point to the end of another season. </div>

Instead of the usual fish photos starting out the blogpost, I thought I'd share a few images of the marvelous things we saw while fishing on the Kenai River this past week. As my friend Debbie would say, "catching fish is just icing on the cake..."<br />

For the next three days it was Tim, Jim, and Mike fishing with me. Jim continued where he left off the night before and caught the first two silver salmon.</div>

The banana curse was alive and well on Friday. It was a very cold 27 degree morning and when I walked down to the boat I found a banana on every seat. <i>Oh, oh, I wonder who did that says the guy in the photo who wouldn't look at me.</i> Tim, Jim, and Mike had a couple of hours to fish before they had to catch a flight home and that wasn't enough time to overcome the banana jinx. Yup, we went fishless. I'm usually not a believer in bananas being bad luck, but this was the only fishless day all silver season. It was a nice streak while it lasted.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/upD6UP4-4emamCQKrh47pjQPQmHnq38UuDc6FFLBU4MYcXIWLtGK42xoDC8" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_fb14_61c_eb95_e9ba" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/upD6UP4-4emamCQKrh47pjQPQmHnq38UuDc6FFLBU4MYcXIWLtGK42xoDC8" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
Being shut out was not how I wanted to end my season, so I was thankful Team Alpha Roofing and Construction fished with me on Saturday. We righted the wrong of having bananas in the boat and caught three quality silver salmon. Not a lot of action for the day, but the way the September run has been, we were thankful to catch what we did.<br />
<br />
Next week, I'll be blogging once again, but it won't be a fishing report with clients. Time permitting, I hope to be fishing myself, but most likely it will be about winterizing our operation.<br />
<br />
See you then.<br />

<i>And the beat goes on, and the beat goes on. La de da de de, la de da de da....</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
Thought I'd continue the music theme from last week's fishing report (ala Lawrence Welk). The beat definitely stayed the same this week. The fishing was never hot, but we managed to catch at least two fish every trip. As my dad would often say, "it could be worse".<br />
<br />
Above is Gary with the first fish of the week.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/v7Tdnh1B6o1a8yhhD6PqDShF6FTCpFkmmTeYyuPx6XGZSiJaen-7rMULaBs" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_186d_7a00_9397_7fe0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/v7Tdnh1B6o1a8yhhD6PqDShF6FTCpFkmmTeYyuPx6XGZSiJaen-7rMULaBs" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
And that's his son Jake ending the day with a fine Kenai silver salmon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

On Wednesday, Gary had the hot rod and caught these two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The next day I guided was on Friday, and the action picked up for us. That's Jake and Gary in the front, and in the back is Lloyd and his daughter Kim. I think having four rods spread out helped find the seam that the fishing were running on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rq8t2BrRaIHsuLc5YOMTPVW0SrCBsDe8aYArO2FuXF8YOVH4EPFC2l5FF3I" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_a87_189f_39b6_eac0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rq8t2BrRaIHsuLc5YOMTPVW0SrCBsDe8aYArO2FuXF8YOVH4EPFC2l5FF3I" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
On Saturday, it was just Lloyd and Kim in my boat. It was a long day, but we are able to fool these three fish into biting. See you guys again!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We went from a warm, wet day on Saturday, to the coldest temperatures of the year on Sunday morning. That's not frost on my boat seat covers, that's ice. Needless to say, it was a very chilly boat ride to start the day.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/8eoBaX2HiLViT8smYypq6y0ogI7_5YWpC5X5poNAl0_suXYtfIgS_m_E9ng" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_b17b_42b7_9e68_a3b2" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/8eoBaX2HiLViT8smYypq6y0ogI7_5YWpC5X5poNAl0_suXYtfIgS_m_E9ng" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
Even though the air temperature was cold, the fishing was decent. You may recognize the lady on the left. That's my wife Jane. On the right, is perennial Beaver Creek Cabins and Guide Service All-Star, Grant. He's been staying at the cabins since the Jahrig's built them, and fishing with me for nearly 20 years. Always great to spend time with you, and I can't wait to do it all over again.<br />
<br />
It's hard to believe, but I'm getting close to the end of my guiding season. I'll be fishing nearly every day next week, and possibly into October. All I can say is I hope the run can hang on a little bit longer...<br />
<br />
See you next week with a new fishing report.<br />

There was a whole lot of this happening this past week....sitting around waiting for a bite. Other than one day when we caught four silvers, and another day when we caught nine, we had what my grandpa would call <i>Lawrence Welk</i> fishing. What's that you ask? Well, <i>Lawrence Welk </i>fishing is when you catch....<i>a one and a two, and a one and two....</i><br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/PZyYG3hS-3pGjfVRfJ0ZUSja2uydRadwCUROvSC1xq-kp_1RdZjYwfci-TE" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_519b_ed12_860_32dc" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/PZyYG3hS-3pGjfVRfJ0ZUSja2uydRadwCUROvSC1xq-kp_1RdZjYwfci-TE" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
For three days I fished with Mike, Michael, Dick, and Rich. We were never shut out, but it would have been nice to find a few more fish each day. Still, enough fish were landed to fill a nice sized fish box for each of them to bring home. A 90lb halibut caught by Michael in Homer sure helped to get that done.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_8OrtQ0_W6miXrsrBskf_tXY2h60D0gYpzyw1TJDoEqJEPMVuPvGksuh6Zg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_4758_202c_550b_8c25" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_8OrtQ0_W6miXrsrBskf_tXY2h60D0gYpzyw1TJDoEqJEPMVuPvGksuh6Zg" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
Here's Mike with a nice, bright silver salmon.</div>

The next three days I got caught up with the Bloch family. Hard to believe that is was six years ago when we last fished silver salmon together. Here's the fish whisperer Ruth with her first fish of the day.</div>

We finished the week fishing in the rain. I always say you need to be a little bit miserable to catch September silvers and that is exactly what happened. That's Dan and Audria kneeling in the front, and in the back, Ruth and Bob.<br />
<br />
Even though the fishing this past week was on the slow side, the time on the water was well spent. I had the pleasure to be with two outstanding groups who really made the days enjoyable. I'm sad to see you all go, but I know I'll see you again in the future.<br />
<br />
Speaking of the future, my immediate future has me on the river for the next couple of weeks. Come back in seven days for a new fishing report. See you then.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/sMz-EiKL8yztw1pbrDMNLIvfqezf7lLrnqKv6yumg96_AEvTcfqOcywnHxU" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_af92_bb68_7fb6_dbbb" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/sMz-EiKL8yztw1pbrDMNLIvfqezf7lLrnqKv6yumg96_AEvTcfqOcywnHxU" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
I fished everyday this past week and there were no easy days. Back that up. That opening line doesn't quite sound right, so let me clarify. The people were easy to be with this past week, it was the catching that wasn't easy.<br />
<br />
Pictured above is Nick, junior member of Team White. His fish came early in the morning on Tuesday, so the optimism was high.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2VX0uCAkcc6IcnZEFplvVxdSd-ib_aOBdv1N_yDlgD91RW-vOtM1-QUUFow" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_4972_cce3_420c_6d35" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2VX0uCAkcc6IcnZEFplvVxdSd-ib_aOBdv1N_yDlgD91RW-vOtM1-QUUFow" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Not long after Nick caught his fish, Craig caught this one (Rod is on his right). We worked hard the rest of the day and managed to put two more fish (4 total) in the box. Unfortunately, none of the fish came on Jeff's line, so that is the reason why he is not pictured in this report. I'm sure the brothers are okay with Jeff not holding a fish, but I was hoping for a dock photo with a dozen salmon at their feet. Next time, boys, next time....</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/2HdVyvFyY6gINKMSWwH_y1ERLGWH3LxrH-ONFwcMmKEoAgWGOWtRnlWoUjc" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_ad52_c125_bb85_f9f4" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/2HdVyvFyY6gINKMSWwH_y1ERLGWH3LxrH-ONFwcMmKEoAgWGOWtRnlWoUjc" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
I thought the second run was starting to pick up after the day I had with Kevin, Ron, Leslie and Greg. Sadly, it turned out to be the the high catch of the week. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/VySIvE_O0RpdP-yzcmk5QoYQ7ilM1Dt72G-6S-ShibupXtZ1DKSzJPDTFsM" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_a551_c8d_2c89_ed15" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/VySIvE_O0RpdP-yzcmk5QoYQ7ilM1Dt72G-6S-ShibupXtZ1DKSzJPDTFsM" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
On Friday, I got reacquainted with Susan, Walter, and Jessica. Not a lot of action, but it was great to spend a day on the water with these guys.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/mKQ7JYEmWHzMGg_anXIWAOCFfxoa-1c0YAqO2GF2uvc2pPvahzpsCPjKd1w" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_b8fc_bc5a_916e_20c9" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/mKQ7JYEmWHzMGg_anXIWAOCFfxoa-1c0YAqO2GF2uvc2pPvahzpsCPjKd1w" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
Saturday, we received some much needed rain. That's a usually a recipe for classic silver salmon fishing on the Kenai. Not this day. Eric ended up with the money fish and collected his bet from his buddy Craig for the first fish caught, the biggest fish caught, and the most fish caught.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/YmCxI4WKBkHGbrJrN_2koFwTRE5CCsBGGqsbl4CofCVk-lzLVpL5zjJe1Ns" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_1d37_3c03_fa07_f645" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/YmCxI4WKBkHGbrJrN_2koFwTRE5CCsBGGqsbl4CofCVk-lzLVpL5zjJe1Ns" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
On Sunday, I fished Eric, Craig, Randy, and my old buddy Gary (we've been fishing together on the Kenai for 20 years). Gary started the morning with this nice fish.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/VqCazdW2NV66dWdHi5lFg5ebLdgsOOpIOF9m2L9YIU7RIzJZN2rvZdWl0-E" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_1385_eb19_66d_b5aa" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/VqCazdW2NV66dWdHi5lFg5ebLdgsOOpIOF9m2L9YIU7RIzJZN2rvZdWl0-E" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
It was a long time in between bites before Craig finally got on board with this one.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/6ofM3B9CacYKsQQWF3kNIkymoIUzs9Ef1fx2x0oGwLfH7v6BM3PUHZnHx-Y" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_53fc_d48_fd57_c437" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/6ofM3B9CacYKsQQWF3kNIkymoIUzs9Ef1fx2x0oGwLfH7v6BM3PUHZnHx-Y" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
Eric caught one, and a little bit later landed this beauty. He once again was able to collect on his bet with Craig for catching the first fish, the biggest fish, and the most fish. Sorry Randy (who is not in any photos), you spent a long day in the boat only to get one legitimate bite. We'll get 'em next time.<br />
<br />
The way this week fished gives me pause to think about the week ahead. If you trust the biologist, we should becoming up on the peak of the second run of silver salmon. I'm an optimist, but I'm not sure what to expect. At least one thing will be certain, you know we'll be giving it a 100%.<br />
<br />
Come back next week to check out the fish photos. I'll see you then.<br />

In the beginning of the week, we were catching boat limits of silver salmon. By the end of the week, we were catching a single fish a day. We are definitely between the runs.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sqDqrPABKZ04FIjhBfaKvkcfzVUmxM_5xPt_9cBNygMQEkNuQOmQqL0LVxM" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_425_2f56_d629_ff23" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sqDqrPABKZ04FIjhBfaKvkcfzVUmxM_5xPt_9cBNygMQEkNuQOmQqL0LVxM" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
If you read the fishing report last week, you'll recognize these folks. From left to right are Gwen, Billie, Sandra, and Lee. Like the previous trip, the ladies were the first to catch their limit.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7_zGo8nCV2Xy_RfQV0OeGsyrO-Ru2rXAngMDBdryDTqroC-bli5iyY6sIHE" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_78ca_dbdb_2302_6b54" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7_zGo8nCV2Xy_RfQV0OeGsyrO-Ru2rXAngMDBdryDTqroC-bli5iyY6sIHE" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
On Wednesday, I fished these guys for a third time. We managed to boat five silver salmon (we lost 9). I was hoping that this was an off day, but it marked the beginning of a tapering run.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/Nu_PZpWt--iVbVlPWrkON3zA4Xh629LwWVBGRySvsEh12fHb0TQ8FdR84EY" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_144e_18ba_d4b4_94ed" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/Nu_PZpWt--iVbVlPWrkON3zA4Xh629LwWVBGRySvsEh12fHb0TQ8FdR84EY" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
On Thursday, I fished my neighbor Nancy and her friend Lynn. Lynn caught the first two, and unfortunately, Nancy did not catch a fish. Oh well, I feel better knowing I have three weeks to get Nancy out again so she can even the score.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/eMaf7z8sPNLD9_cZp40nbQwlao4bbAwgw3n4l2wfMcHi05CTrQL--Gq_ibg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_c7a2_ed9_ddbc_9b17" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/eMaf7z8sPNLD9_cZp40nbQwlao4bbAwgw3n4l2wfMcHi05CTrQL--Gq_ibg" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
On Friday, Greg and Leslie spent the day with me. Leslie caught the only silver salmon. It sure was a nice one. By the way, that's not fog in the background. That's smoke from the Swan Lake fire. I do appreciate the people who have checked in on our well being. Other than occasional smoke, we are doing just fine and are not in harms way.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Saturday afternoon I fished with the Larson's and Johnson's. The only fish caught was by Laura. It may look like her husband Eric wasn't happy with the catch, but that's just how he smiles... </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I finished the week fishing Team White (Rod, Nick, Jeff, Craig). Rod caught the only fish of the day. We're going to do it all over again on Wednesday, and my goal is to have a photo of the entire team holding fish.<br />
<br />
For the week ahead, I'm hoping that the second run finds its way into the river. My week is full and I'd like the fish box to be that way too....<br />
<br />
See you next week.<br />

<i>"Hey Keith, why do you have two nets in the boat?"</i><br />
<br />
<i>"You never know when you'll get two silvers on at the same time."</i><br />
<br />
This week it happened. It happened twice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kiCQ558gofJjZBaucUGXTPKzpiMZDr-GcvgR8kp1kEyELZft1HdRmC3qYk" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_df7d_9fed_1d9e_86bc" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kiCQ558gofJjZBaucUGXTPKzpiMZDr-GcvgR8kp1kEyELZft1HdRmC3qYk" style="height: auto; width: 293px;" title="" tooltip="" width="293" /></a></div>
I'm glad to report that the morning temperatures have been normal this past week. It hit 38 degrees a couple of times. Dressing appropriately for the predawn chill is essential. Renee and I are modeling the proper clothing for a silver salmon fishing trip on the Kenai. The cool temperatures are a welcome respite from all the heat we’ve been having.<br />
<div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/Bp0UD4Sa6smQC71CzGK8553HCAEZB49D8tSVmTXq1N8QZsK1XmHPcVEGs9I" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_3e5_eae1_2ad_6165" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/Bp0UD4Sa6smQC71CzGK8553HCAEZB49D8tSVmTXq1N8QZsK1XmHPcVEGs9I" style="height: auto; width: 300px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
On to the fishing report.<br />
<br />
It was a great start to the week. Visiting and fishing with longtime friends, Todd and Renee, was good for the soul. The icing on the cake was having new friends, Cheryl and Mush, in the boat. They fished with me last year during some very poor king salmon conditions and I told them they ought to come back to fish the fun fish....silvers. Glad they did. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/yjTJnKx3wSAeqRZliAYuOSt4wTyX2yK4xBbetNw58ac6E1d57WIoqMWlfN0" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_8a1_4ade_c273_6046" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/yjTJnKx3wSAeqRZliAYuOSt4wTyX2yK4xBbetNw58ac6E1d57WIoqMWlfN0" style="height: auto; width: 300px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
What’s better than doing this one day with these guys? It’s doing it for two days. You’d be proud, George, that I didn’t repeat a single story. That feat is nearly as impressive as the fish we caught over the two days.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/VWHXEy3D9in9f9bGQVtdig8TUpcrqX2Qd9unFd3jjWg79xKvRaSeghDFF8k" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_a822_5944_ff36_4784" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/VWHXEy3D9in9f9bGQVtdig8TUpcrqX2Qd9unFd3jjWg79xKvRaSeghDFF8k" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
The next day we had the first double silver salmon catch of the year. That's Cliff and Jason. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Atzn7mXzuptwWLb4y8OYbjrkaLc4EFDcjWKMm1eTEBTj9gInqdE9r84JZN4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_661e_c8b4_7a82_b3de" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Atzn7mXzuptwWLb4y8OYbjrkaLc4EFDcjWKMm1eTEBTj9gInqdE9r84JZN4" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
We didn't get all of our fish, but sure had our chances. Thanks Jared, Jeremy, Jason, and Cliff for a great day on the water. Your enthusiasm for this fishery tells me you’ll all be back. </div>
<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was hard to believe that it's been six years since Billie and Gwen last fished with me. Instead of family, they brought their friends, Lee and Sandra along to enjoy all things Alaska. The ladies had their limit early in the day (naturally) and we were struggling to find the last two fish for the guys. We missed a few, but on our end of the day Hail Mary troll we had our second double silver salmon hook up of the week. In my world, it was as eventful as a walk off home run in baseball. Wow. That’s how you want to end a week of fishing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
See you next week for an update on the silver salmon action.</div>

Silver salmon was the focus this week, and the fishing was very good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/mD7L9KSqQwpAgWDooFQfsv4Q9YumG-0MF9BS30aBNghmyGARMfR7BEVxdOg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_1e71_9de5_8c64_42bd" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/mD7L9KSqQwpAgWDooFQfsv4Q9YumG-0MF9BS30aBNghmyGARMfR7BEVxdOg" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
On Tuesday, I fished the Marlatt family once again. Here's Alyssa with her first silver salmon ever. It took a little coaxing to get her to hold it, but she came through like a champ (notice her hands...).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nUpUtkJ6T9Ih0xPt7Bu9uV8esSsWVr4XK3zqRlSMbVaK6NtJPWegI0lFVnE" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_8c9f_dd4f_200e_caff" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nUpUtkJ6T9Ih0xPt7Bu9uV8esSsWVr4XK3zqRlSMbVaK6NtJPWegI0lFVnE" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Sister Megan continued her fishy ways from the week before and caught this one. She also caught another one to complete her silver salmon limit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/EWMEfG4vbY-rfGDPu0Ku0n2JuO4_i62h0ly3O0_-yTxd14v4K_Xb9tOL7PQ" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_9908_c9d_504e_4cbf" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/EWMEfG4vbY-rfGDPu0Ku0n2JuO4_i62h0ly3O0_-yTxd14v4K_Xb9tOL7PQ" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
Dad Mike, ended the day with the biggest fish. Please don't ask me why there's a beer coozy in it's mouth...<br />

On Wednesday, Angeline and Tavish got their limit of nice silver salmon. Way to go Team Wisconsin.<br />

On Thursday, I fished with my college roommate, Buddy, his son, and their friends.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nn28duTu923O2leNKJJB2WVuXpbye-dXL4n4VnDshGwnKKP2G5nYrvK87Dc" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_a8cb_d64a_1535_36bf" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nn28duTu923O2leNKJJB2WVuXpbye-dXL4n4VnDshGwnKKP2G5nYrvK87Dc" style="cursor: move; height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
Here's his son Tucker.<br />

We caught our limit of silvers (and let a couple go). From left to right are Tucker, Buddy, Derek, and Byron.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/WyIqfd3Xcu1Z8CvvOUeQvi6HHXA2-ZFLoM6nY2efBCryWk_Y56qgIBpdfFs" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_99ad_8f85_c7f_5eb3" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/WyIqfd3Xcu1Z8CvvOUeQvi6HHXA2-ZFLoM6nY2efBCryWk_Y56qgIBpdfFs" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
On Friday I fished with Cy, Matt, Craig, and Ardiss. We didn't quite get our boat limit but we had our chances to do so. Can you tell what state everyone is from? </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rTTIIR6j4WU7xkPtGBfPzeJZ_TUXO7qU1ggwKhLe0neXue2IIiH3kgEsdA4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_6d23_679a_c710_e7e1" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rTTIIR6j4WU7xkPtGBfPzeJZ_TUXO7qU1ggwKhLe0neXue2IIiH3kgEsdA4" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Saturday, I had Derek, Tucker, Byron, and Buddy out on the river once again. The only thing different from our trip on Thursday is we caught a couple of extra fish: a pink, and two red salmon. The competition was hot for these guys, and as judge/guide, I would have to declare a draw when it comes to Team USA vs. Team Canada...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I finished the week on Sunday with a solid effort from Team Minnesota and Team South Carolina. That's Mike and Mary in the front (Team Minnesota), and Robert Allen and Robert in the back (Team South Carolina).<br />
<br />
My only prediction for the week ahead is more of the same. I've got great people coming in, and I expect the silver fishing to continue to be great as well.<br />
<br />
See you next Sunday.<br />

We spent more time this past week out of the boat than in the boat. That's because the red salmon fishing has been that good. We tried to find a few silvers, and we did, but the generous limit and action with red salmon was too hard to resist.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/qQ4O5qrlraLw8SnztF1vuEJKstPTiKa4fz4VaKTlZi6TOSzdKDnlpvOvqm4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_3180_ff87_cfb1_82c1" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/qQ4O5qrlraLw8SnztF1vuEJKstPTiKa4fz4VaKTlZi6TOSzdKDnlpvOvqm4" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
Here's Kris, John, Nate, and Del. We spent the first two hours of our day trying to catch silvers and found only one. We spent the next two hours fishing red salmon and caught twenty three.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/vNVY7oR798AycgbFy8DTPXSuDXxAHrcdaERsgC5rJypoAFcHjc3dPSDEsYo" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_c506_2bd0_8683_3096" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/vNVY7oR798AycgbFy8DTPXSuDXxAHrcdaERsgC5rJypoAFcHjc3dPSDEsYo" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
It's been awhile since I last saw Orrin. He brought his buddy Tim along and before lunch they had their limit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/0073U3ISY1WgtvtV9HO_Qj4Y1b3q6wExPT6xr18pufvnt8qmbvrfGkyLpMk" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_ef2_4d96_e5b1_1100" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/0073U3ISY1WgtvtV9HO_Qj4Y1b3q6wExPT6xr18pufvnt8qmbvrfGkyLpMk" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Taylor and Kris were in Alaska for their honeymoon, and the last thing they did before flying back to Wisconsin was fish on the Kenai. We targeted silvers first thing in the morning and Taylor found this one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/jRz2AqlF8zY_hgtEl2uphlKVTnpGFZtMVIsdbA_UQGsIejym9ly0Xt4Lyto" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_24af_9673_8fbb_f7ee" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/jRz2AqlF8zY_hgtEl2uphlKVTnpGFZtMVIsdbA_UQGsIejym9ly0Xt4Lyto" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
It was slow going in the boat, so we put on our waders and started flipping for red salmon. The action was steady.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/m2AJnDH08X-OCW3-qHYhZyMbBDBmQM6UB5S_yOfqr41UXeUvHgeW2ypvZuc" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_9442_a474_1967_9c2b" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/m2AJnDH08X-OCW3-qHYhZyMbBDBmQM6UB5S_yOfqr41UXeUvHgeW2ypvZuc" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></a></div>
If you read last week's report, you know I haven't been able to fish with Jane as much as I'd like. Well, we had an open afternoon, and I brought her and Kate out. Glad I did.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A great week of fishing ended with the Marlatt family. From left to right are Alyssa, Anders, Mike, Alex, and Meghan. Mike, and his wife Pam, fished with me two years ago during an incredible king salmon run. This year they wanted to try silvers (or reds, or whatever was in the river) and brought their daughters and sons in law with. It was fun, fun, fun...<br />
<br />
Thoughts about the week ahead. I really don't know how long this fantastic run of red salmon will continue. I hope it's just long enough for a big ball of silver salmon to find their way into the river. I have some old friends coming in this week and I really don't want to tell them, "you should've been here last week..."<br />
<br />
See you next week for a new report.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/gTM7-bRh_oZ1ynPhPo7h9ej9r_4OL1l-F6VQjII4lCHxLWmHr3OOAPV0ysA" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_93f_4bdb_ddb2_f1dd" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/gTM7-bRh_oZ1ynPhPo7h9ej9r_4OL1l-F6VQjII4lCHxLWmHr3OOAPV0ysA" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
I was reminded by Jane that she didn’t get out fishing last year for red salmon. That was enough of a hint for me to find time to right this wrong. How's this for timing? A big school of red salmon moved through the lower river when we were out. It took less than an hour to catch our limit.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Speaking of timing, if you notice, they’re are no photos of king salmon this week. The final day of the season ended with a thud. Thanks Jim, Colin, and Michael for your patience in the boat. We tried hard and fished a lot of water but the mighty king proved to be elusive. To quote Jim, "you can't catch what's not here..." Sad, but true.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4h9SGybRlwgfdkTOi2zqrJ46DnIUgTlTkoe9GgVL09o-60DpzNmMIahPOww" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_b75e_f652_f6a8_dcca" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4h9SGybRlwgfdkTOi2zqrJ46DnIUgTlTkoe9GgVL09o-60DpzNmMIahPOww" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Now on to something completely different.<br />
<br />
The Beaver Creek All Stars were out in full force dipnetting for red salmon on July 31st, the final day of the 2019 season. Here’s Mack and Carol doing what they do best: recreating on the Kenai. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/RecbDi_ITsqfK0ZEAJPSDHLaWVcShnlI-Xp0bTqAVvG1aJPGWSWR6sA3qHU" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_a1ed_6e97_8b8_c2b9" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/RecbDi_ITsqfK0ZEAJPSDHLaWVcShnlI-Xp0bTqAVvG1aJPGWSWR6sA3qHU" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
It’s a deep bench for Team Beaver Creek. I was invited to go dipnetting with these perennial All-Stars. From left to right is El Capitan, Greg, fish wrangler MJ, and the deck foreman, Ron. It was a well oiled machine and in a couple of hours we had all the fish we needed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/SbZxaCkbrSUK_9C113j5CaJmCP99lXu1igMH6ffE9kQ4PEdwAG3xXHtSNEI" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_1167_3fc4_6763_9992" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/SbZxaCkbrSUK_9C113j5CaJmCP99lXu1igMH6ffE9kQ4PEdwAG3xXHtSNEI" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Thanks guys, for helping Jane and I put away a few fish for the winter...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NKZ2sOuqALwdRzkjA4S-_uJG_FtO5DmyR1bTbjHxwrSyp7dg1UQIyqqkv_A" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_7a71_9c38_57cc_5fe6" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NKZ2sOuqALwdRzkjA4S-_uJG_FtO5DmyR1bTbjHxwrSyp7dg1UQIyqqkv_A" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
With the king season in the rearview, August 2nd was my first day fishing for silver salmon. Team Sedlacek returned after a six year absence and it was good to see them all. Here's Jake with the first silver of the year. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/gTlm1yc5NekLudxn5RiSm5NR4XD7pfoQ6xW3XYKuRvpXolY3TFIksuA_QGI" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_8512_46f_2636_8247" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/gTlm1yc5NekLudxn5RiSm5NR4XD7pfoQ6xW3XYKuRvpXolY3TFIksuA_QGI" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
Silvers were a bit scarce on this day, so we changed things up and decided to get on the bank and target red salmon. Here's Summer, the fish whisperer with a jumbo red salmon. That's her dad, Lowell in the background with her brother Jake, and sister in law Phoenix.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/WVCMkD5C4vCds5qx9SjYiMAnyDatS3xehjEKTgSoZ__UxBZ1f9bD9CAv7Po" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_6cd4_80b_ec3d_e070" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/WVCMkD5C4vCds5qx9SjYiMAnyDatS3xehjEKTgSoZ__UxBZ1f9bD9CAv7Po" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
The next day, I fished with Jake and his family. The silver action was a little bit better. Here's Ty with the first one of the day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/0cDAnAYDGshbS7HpxJCnBI8HuS_mrjFPtkiRpnfQ4BD3FWnw4-fYofIbzKg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_44b8_72c0_83df_dc82" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/0cDAnAYDGshbS7HpxJCnBI8HuS_mrjFPtkiRpnfQ4BD3FWnw4-fYofIbzKg" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
His sister, McKenzie, followed up with a nice one as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/Yv8CZryYBZx8f77megC1ivoaHUzCWEEZSmalWAY99u8HYqTUlXOWL-9YMmw" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_55a1_5324_dd94_aaa8" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/Yv8CZryYBZx8f77megC1ivoaHUzCWEEZSmalWAY99u8HYqTUlXOWL-9YMmw" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
Heidi caught the next one. About fifteen minutes later she caught a second one. She officially is the first, of what I hope is many, people who limit out on silver salmon this year.<br />
<br />
I've got a full week ahead of silver trips and I hope each tide brings in more fish. If the silvers prove elusive, we may switch things up a bit and go after reds. Come back next week to see how it all shakes out. See you then!<br />

Same old, same old.<br />
<br />
King salmon fishing was once again tough this past week. A few were caught, but it was a struggle to find willing biters. The positive takeaway from the week is that the red salmon run is smoking hot. The run is coming in so strong that the limit has been doubled from three to six fish per day. Better get 'em why they're here!<br />
<br />
On to the weekly report. That's Harold in the photo above. He's a high school classmate of mine so I think the ol' BHS magic is what got this king salmon to bite. At least that's the story I'm sticking with.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here's Martin with a hard earned king salmon.</div>

And his son Chris also logged a lot of time to catch this king salmon.</div>

I wish I could have put the youngest of the crew, Jacob (third generation) on a king salmon. Even though that didn't happen this trip, the most memorable day this past week was fishing with him on the river bank for red salmon. Jacob expertly used a fly rod with a circle hook to catch his limit. He was hooking quite a few fish, but then he was struggling to find his last one. After twenty minutes of nothing, I decided to take a look at his gear. There was a sinker, a swivel, a leader, but no hook. That explained his cold spell. I tied on another hook and in a matter of minutes he caught his last fish. Martin, Chris, Jacob, thanks for the sweet corn, the Moose's Loose apple fritter, and the memories of good times in 2019. See you all again in two years!<br />

Here's a pile of reds that the Sorenson, Janz, and Hefner clan caught. If you’re wondering why there’s so many people on the dock, it’s because I helped Boo Kandas with this group. Wish we could have found a few kings, but this was a heck of a Plan B....</div>

It's been quite a few years (17?), but I finally got to fish again with Matt, his wife, sister in law and brother in law. Matt wanted to catch reds, and that is what we did. It took about an hour to limit out.<br />

I finished the week fishing with Randy, Jake, and Leslie. We couldn't find a king this day, but we sure found the red salmon. Hey guys, it was a lot of fun.<br />
<br />
For the week ahead I anticipate the king fishing to be the same: tough. I think we'll find some fish, but there will be no easy ones. Oh well, if that's the case, I'll be packing the waders and the red gear...<br />
<br />
That's the report. Come back next week to see how the final days of the king season pans out.<br />

It was a tough week of king fishing. A lot of hours for not a lot of fish. I think the fish didn’t get the memo that this is the peak time for the run. Sure, we caught a few fish, but the amount of effort given did not produce the results I've become accustom to.<br />
<br />
On to the good stuff. How about that mother/son photo? That’s Lance on the left, and Kris on the right. These fish were caught on Thursday. Here's a little backstory. Lance sat for two days in the boat without a bite. On the third day, he decided to go golfing in the morning with his aunt Teresa. He shot an 89 and nearly had a hole in one. He then came out fishing in the afternoon and caught this 40lb king. To quote Lance, <i>"it was a good day." </i>It got a little bit better when his mother followed up with her second king.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/hzOIApNKBjyLt_-eOhx97lWo0z-f7izaF4BG7tU3pzlXSpV_Fswu4NZ5IU4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" id="id_d86d_7689_ee1d_3bec" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/hzOIApNKBjyLt_-eOhx97lWo0z-f7izaF4BG7tU3pzlXSpV_Fswu4NZ5IU4" style="height: auto; width: 400px;" title="" tooltip="" width="400" /></a></div>
I normally post photos chronologically, but the mother/son photo was too good not to have it on top. The fish above Kris caught on Super Tuesday. I was really hoping that would foreshadow the week ahead, but.....</div>

<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/24sBhlm0g-EdpoJ5wL0q8veLahYr-uTYoscHGRtAqh0GGCGMpG2J4AXR41U" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" id="id_ead4_49a1_7ecb_86ac" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/24sBhlm0g-EdpoJ5wL0q8veLahYr-uTYoscHGRtAqh0GGCGMpG2J4AXR41U" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" width="300" /></a></div>
How's this for luck? John Zemke ended up with the Charlie Brown Award. "I caught a salmon! I caught a trout! I caught a rock...." Yup, that's right. John was able to hook and land this rock. It was his only bite for the week. Good grief.</div>

The other big catch for the week was towing a disabled boat back to the dock. I figured being a Good Samaritan would produce good fishing karma for the rest of the day. Nope. Not a single bite afterwards.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here’s the rest of the Zemke/Rosenquist clan. In the front are John and Teresa. In the back are Libby and Dennis. We joked about participation awards after four days of limited action. All I can say is you guys get it, and I can’t thank you enough for your attitude and patience (the camaraderie was great too!). </div>

I finished the week by fishing Jason, Katie, Dylan, and Tyler. That's Jason with the one and only fish and bite for the day. You guys should also be commended for your patience. Fishing was tough.</div>

It’s not all gloom and doom because the sun will come out tomorrow. Even though I can not guide for kings on a Sunday, I plan to hit the banks with an old friend to fish for red salmon. From what I’m observing from the boat, the red fishing has been steady. The run is coming in much stronger than last year and that’s a good thing.<br />
<br />
See you next week for another up to date Kenai fishing report.<br />
